Arlan Stragewayes: Completed

Captain Arlan Strangewayes

This may be the fastest I ever painted a model.  Good practice with the upcoming painting challenge.  I had already started Arlan before I heard learned of the challenge, so I wanted to get him done before the challenge began.  I’m pleased with how he came out, though as usual the highlighting with frostbite got chalky on me.  I painted details on Arlan’s gauges.  First time I’ve tried that.  Menoth White Highlight background, Skorne Red pie slice and a Thamar Black needle.  I like them, they add a little something to him, more than just leaving them blank, certainly.  Might be interesting to add a thin brown glaze and let it collect heavier at the bottom, to give a dirty/oily feel the gauges, like the glasses need to be wiped clean.

The base I really loaded with gears, like he’s just finished up repairing a damage ‘jack on the battlefield.  Unlike my Stormblades, I did my best to keep these gears feeling like they were on top of the dirt, rather than buried in it.  Still I wanted them to be secure so I had superglued them to the base.  I think next time It would be better to build up a thin layer of green stuff, both to provide anchoring for the gears and to build them up so the grit doesn’t cover them.

Voltaic gauntlet and profile

I like the Voltaic gauntlet, though it doesn’t pop as much as I’d hoped.  Another gauge on his shoulder.  Speaking of shoulders I user by ‘Jack Bone/MWH theme color on his shoulders, similar to Kara’s shoulder pad.

Massive boiler for a non-warjack to haul around

More gauges on the back.  The boiler he carries is really massive.  Much larger than a warcasters, granted he would be less concerned with mobility, but what’s he doing with all that extra steam power?  Unless you’re telling my Cygnar’s best mechanik is rolling with an outdated, inefficient boiler, in which case I don’t believe you.  I guess this is a case of fluff colliding with rules.  A 2pt solo with 20 damage boxes would be a bit out-of-place to say the least.

“Fixer”, the big wrench

A good shot of the big wrench “Fixer”.  Also a good shot of the Cygnus which initially I actually had painted too dark.  The brown that is now at the tail had crept all the way up into the wings, and it lost the yellow feeling, so I pushed it pack with some Ember Orange and more Cygnus Yellow.
