...and Company

Boomhowler and Company

Some of you may remember by assembly guide for the Boomhowlers on HCO over a year ago: Boomhowler and Company.  The time finally came to get them painted.  First thing, however, I needed to fill the unit out to max, but due to the repackaging and popularity of Boomies, I couldn’t find the two blisters I would need.  So a bits order was made from PP, which I think ended up cheaper than the blisters would have been, or pretty close anyway. 2′ x 2′ Warmachine Demo Board

I’ve been thinking about making another board for a while now, and after seeing a friend’s demo board I realized it would be best to try out the techniques I might use on a small 2′ x 2′ demo board.  And of course I had to build a snazzy wooden frame for it.

Taryn di la Rovissi

Taryn in Murderous Magenta

Taryn in Murderous Magenta

After the recent errata that made Taryn’s Shadow Fire ability work for all (not just friendly-faction) models, she’s become a new weapon for Cygnar’s shooty casters.  A model she hits with Shadow Fire now does not block LOS for anyone. eCaine and Kara Sloan no doubt shared more than few libations celebrating this one.  I decided to put her in my Sloan/Stormwall list and wanted to get her painted up.  I used her in a tournament, but sadly I didn’t quite get her all painted in time.  Nevertheless I did still use her to make the Retribution Colossal not block LOS to get a Sloan shot off on their caster dealing significant damage.  Sadly Reinholdt had died earlier, so there was no reload to be had and no way to finish off what would have been a fine assassination.

Cape was based with the airbrush

Cape was based with the airbrush

I used the airbrush to base the model in Murderous Magenta, a nice change of pace from the studio model which is a bland combination of black and brown.  I really like how the cape came out and the color scheme in general worked well.  Not a fan of her eyes though. They seem a little too Kewpie Doll and not enough mercenary.

Horgenhold Forge Guard

Horgenhold Forge Guard

Horgenhold Forge Guard

I’ve completed the min-unit of Forge Guard.  I purchased the repackaged max unit, but painting units is painful enough without doing all 10 at once.  Also I only need 6 for the list I have in mind.  The thought is to have these guys screen for my Storm Strider.  Weapon Masters with reach should discourage models wanting to take free strikes to get past them.  Though at SPD 4 I’ve got to make sure they get out ahead of the Strider enough to screen for it without significantly slowing it down.

Initially when painting began I though they were wall Hammerfall Khaki and this was a simple unit, but once you get brush to model you realize there’s a lot of detail here. There’s the green shoulders and elbow armor, the gold chest piece, which I them matched to the rear armor piece which isn’t shown in the studio scheme. There’s leather straps, green pants beneath the armor plates, red insignia and so on.

Backpacks, lots of backpacks

Backpacks, lots of backpacks

Each model in the unit sports an identical backpack, topped with a bed roll and hung with a mug. For the bases I consulted the old IK World Guide to see what Horgenhold was like: mountain and cold.  So I went with larger grit for the bases, dry brushing the Battlefield Brown with Bloodstone Red, then Morrow White.  I then used Army Painter winter tufts and snow flock to complete it.

The leader

The leader

The only model with a fully exposed face is the leader, and I enjoyed painting it.  It came out well, especially the eyes.

I’m looking forward to getting these guys on the table and I really should paint up the other 4 eventually….someday… Have I mentioned I don’t like painting units?
